Hanbok in Bukchon Hanok Village

Hanbok in Bukchon: free palace entry and what counts as hanbok, rentals near Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung with their extra charges, and the red-zone hours.

Updated November 2026

Visitors in hanbok enter Seoul’s royal palaces free, Korean or foreign, under the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center’s rule, as long as they wear a jeogori, the upper garment, with a skirt or trousers. In Bukchon itself hanbok changes nothing about the rules: the red zone around Bukchon-ro 11-gil is open to tourists from 10:00 to 17:00, and a hanbok photo shoot is sightseeing. The rental on this page is Daehan Hanbok’s Seoul: Hanbok Rental with Gyeongbokgung Palace Entry: the hanbok, an underskirt, a handbag, a hairband and a locker, from an hour to a day, from $7 per person, checked November 2026, with 1,027 reviews. That is a rental price, not a tour: hairstyling is sold on site, and a women’s petticoat and accessories are optional add-ons.

Powerd by GetYourGuide

The calendar above is the Daehan Hanbok rental. The “palace entry” in its title is the free entry that comes with wearing hanbok. The shop is at 133-2 Sajik-ro, 2nd floor, Jongno-gu, and you choose between a traditional and a premium hanbok.

Free palace entry: what counts

The Royal Palaces and Tombs Center, part of the Korea Heritage Service, lets visitors in hanbok into the palaces free, whatever their nationality. Both traditional and modern hanbok count, but the outfit has to be complete:

  • a jeogori, the hanbok jacket or upper garment, and
  • a hanbok skirt or trousers.

A jeogori with jeans does not count, and neither does a hanbok skirt with a T-shirt. The Changdeokgung Secret Garden is ticketed separately from the palace. Gyeongbokgung is closed on Tuesdays, so a palace day in hanbok there needs another day of the week.

From-prices, per person, checked November 2026: Daehan Hanbok $7 for either a traditional or a premium hanbok, so the from-price buys one of two grades, the two Hanboknam shops $14 each, gigibebe hanbok $10. They are rental prices; none includes a guide.

If Bukchon comes after the palace, the palace you pick sets the walk: a walking route planner gives 991 metres from Changdeokgung’s Donhwamun Gate to the south end of Bukchon-ro 11-gil, and 1.3 km from Gyeongbokgung’s Gwanghwamun Gate.

Rental shops keep evening hours; the red zone does not. A rental from gigibebe hanbok has to be back by 19:00, but tourists may visit the red zone around Bukchon-ro 11-gil only from 10:00 to 17:00, and Jongno-gu counts photos and video there as tourism. Plan the palace first and the lanes before 17:00, then return the hanbok.

The houses in Bukchon are homes. Visit Seoul asks visitors to keep their voices down and not to photograph into houses even when a door stands open, and the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s 2025 tourist guidebook asks visitors to “stay quiet for the local residents”. Photograph the roofs and the lane, and step aside for the people who live there. Bukchon visiting hours and the red zone has the rule in full.

A photographer instead

If the photos matter more than the walk, NASL SNAP's 1-hour hanbok photo session at Gyeongbokgung is priced per group of one, with a palace admission ticket, at least 200 original photos and retouched photos by option; hair, makeup and transport are not included, and the photos arrive by cloud link within 14 days. A hanbok rental is not among its inclusions.
